Dentor

self dental care platform

Stay home, check and take care of your teeth.

DENTOR is a product service platform for personal self dental care. Research has shown that the biggest problem with improper dental care is that users are unaware of the condition of their teeth and are using the wrong cleaning tools. To solve this problem, DENTOR consists of “CHECKER”, an intelligent tooth condition checking device, and “CARE”, a dental care kit based on an updated oral examination with the CHECKER. The device can be connected to a mobile app to check the condition of the teeth, such as bad breath, tooth decay and tooth discoloration. The Care unit consists of a bespoke set of dental care aids and is delivered via a subscription service.

Background research

Dental care ranks first among Koreans' medical expenses.

Interest in dental care is increasing worldwide, and expenditure is also increasing. According to a research conducted in Korea, dental care ranks first among Koreans' medical expenses.

Design Insight

The reason why people can't take care of their teeth properly is because they don't know what type of their teeth are.

According to a survey by the Korean Dental Association, 70 percent of people brush their teeth incorrectly. People don't know exactly what type of their teeth are and how to care. Education on this from the dentist is as crucial as choosing the right care method for the health of the teeth. DENTOR is intended to be a permanent way of assessing the condition of teeth and, if necessary, to establish direct contact with the treating dentist.

Sketches & Prototyping

DENTOR is designed to reflect facial ergonomics because users need to attach a checker to their mouth.

DENTOR was designed with facial ergonomics in mind, as the user is supposed to attach the camera part to their mouth. I received a grant from Samsung Electronics for the production of the mock-up and was able to get UP Solution to implement it. After several meetings with experts from Samsung Electronics, the technical feasibility of devices and services was reviewed.

Final Design Result

CHECKER

The CHECKER from DENTOR is a device that checks the degree of caries, bad breath and discoloration of the teeth in conjunction with a smartphone.

When the Q-Ray beam of the CHECKER is shone on the teeth, caries and plaque light up red. The optical sensor can be used to determine the degree of tooth discoloration, and the degree of bad breath can be determined by detecting hydrogen sulfide, the cause of bad breath. All this information is stored in the application.

CARE

CARE is a dental care set consisting of toothbrushes, toothpaste, floss and interdental toothbrushes and is provided through subscription services.

The components of CARE are delivered once a month through a subscription service, and the composition of the care products varies depending on the dental condition that the user updates through CHECKER.

Example :: If it is confirmed through CHECKER that there is more tartar than normal, a high-intensity brush that is good for removing tartar is provided instead of the soft brush previously used.

DENTOR App service

The DENTOR app has divided the categories into three colors so that users can intuitively understand the condition of their teeth.

With the help of a diagram, users can see the changes over time at a glance. The dental condition recorded in the app is useful when users make a dental appointment. Based on the location data, the app recommends a nearby dentist who can best solve the user's problems. When the appointment is confirmed, the data about the user's dental condition is sent to the dentist so that he or she can treat the patient more accurately.
