Sssss...

glow up blow up

Sssss..." is a light that can be inflated by blowing air. It is inspired by the structure of origami and is made with the folding structure of orgami. The lamp is folded, and the more air is blown into it, the more it lengthens and moves forward, like a snake, reaching a maximum length of 3 meters.

Research & Observation

There are various inflatable products around us, putting air in to make a structure, and sealing it to keep its shape stable.

The force of the air is enough strong to supports the weight while enduring external shocks, and also has a waterproof function. Using these features, people can create solid structures with fewer materials, save space by removing the air when they moving, and install products quickly when using them.

Experiment with materials

Simple prototypes with various material were made with sealing by heat, and lighting was put into them to observe how the materials change by lighting.

In class, students conducted various experiments for inflatable design. In addition, we experimented to make a huge inflatable structure together using vinyl.

Inspiration

Origami, which is created by folding paper, is a good inspiration for designers. Origami is especially good for creating inflatable design products, mainly because the paper folds and unfolds to create structures and increase the volume. And the geometric shape amuses the people who see it, and it also increases the engineering stability.

Structure design

I applied the design of the structure to various materials. Various materials such as PP, PE, Tyvek, and Nylon were cut and folded to manufacture a structure. For sealing, a vinyl sealing machine and an iron were used for thermal treatment.

Prototyping

The outer shell of the luminaire was made by folding a huge LDPE (low density polyethylene). An LED strip was attached to the inside, and a hexagonal plastic shell was attached to both ends of the luminaire to seal out the air.

Using a foot pump to pump air. The more air you put in, the longer the light is sideways.

Final Design

At the end of the lamp is a hook that allows the user to hang the lamp on a wall or other structure. Because the long body of the light can be arranged in different shapes, the user can customize it as they like. Because the LED light attached to the inside can be changed in color, it can be installed by changing the color according to the purpose. For example, if you put a long lamp along the hallway, you can illuminate a long room, and if you hang one side on the wall, you can evenly illuminate a high room.
